From The Revelations of St. John — 12:7 And there was war in heaven.
Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back … 12:9 The great dragon was hurled down — that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray …
OK — There’s the name Michael, which my parents gave to me.
This blog has the title Beat The Devil in reference to a song written by Rhodes Scholar and helicopter pilot Kris Kristofferson in the mid-nineteen sixties, when he was trying to break into the music business in Nashville. One spoken line goes something like this:
I’m not saying I beat the Devil, but I drank his beer for nothing …
Mine isn’t the only blog which has quoted it either — the Devil you say!
This graphic is my mash-up of two Gustave Dore illustrations from the Nineteenth Century — the name Michael refers to both ancient Archangel and Twenty-First Century digital collage-maker. H. Pisan was Dore’s engraver on the dragon image.
